Coffee or the Shirt
By Erin Lamb
Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. ~Romans 12: 2
Okay so this is informal and quick. I have about 10 minutes to write to you. I went to coffee last night with a good friend. Later that evening I could still smell coffee. I did not actually have coffee. I had a smoothie. However, the aroma of coffee filled the place. I started to think about the nature of a spiritual atmosphere. I notice that when I am around joyful people, I leave with more joy. Just like the shirt, I absorb their joy. I have also found that if I am around really negative, pessimistic atmospheres, I begin to have negative thoughts.
Truly we either change the atmosphere around us by what we carry or we are absorb what is around us. Are you the coffee, permeating the atmosphere around you with goodness? Are you so saturating that people who are not even in close contact with you are affected by you? Or are you the shirt; you are changed by what goes on around you. Either way can be good or bad. If your influence is good, then what you carry will affect the people around you. If you carry around bitterness, hate, negativity, etc…then you too can affect the atmosphere around you.
So in closing don’t copy the customs of this world and don’t let them change you. Easier said than done, at least I can admit that for me. It’s easy to have your good mood stomped on or have stinking thinking. But what if instead of being changed by what happens externally, we change the world by manifesting the God in us, allowing the internal to change the external.
His presence is filled with joy, love, hope, healing, and freedom. So, are you the coffee or the shirt!
Absorb the good, ditch the negative, shine bright for the world, and know that when you are aware of His presence, you are affecting everything around you whether you are conscious of it or not!
Oh, and make sure you have some quality time with Jesus. His presence changes everything. ☺
